UCHS celebrating ‘Spirit Week’
by Staff Report
UNION COUNTY — This week is Spirit Week at Union County High School, celebrating school spirit with activities including a Homecoming Parade, Powder Puff Football and the annual Homecoming football game, as well as student activities during the school day.
Last Friday, UCHS students received a Homecoming newsletter with stories, photos and schedules of Spirit Week activities. The newsletter was written and edited by students Tiffany Rogers, Rebecka Bishop, Jacob Gault, Koby Lee, Lauren Mullis, and Chasmyn Smith. Sponsor teachers were Heather Camp and Tiffany Gaskin. The following comes from the newsletter:
“Sonya Glenn, chair of the PBIS (Positive Behavior, Interventions and Support) committee at UCHS, explained that the students ‘will have a lot of activities to participate in that will culminate with the big football game Friday night against the Newberry High School Bulldogs.’
Students will be able to participate in a door-decorating contest, dress-up days, the homecoming parade, a bonfire, the Powder Puff game, and of course, the pep rally and football game.
‘Homecoming is a time to celebrate UCHS. It’s a time to come and reflect back on years in high school,’ Glenn said.
Mr. Floyd Lyles, principal of UCHS, stated, ‘Homecoming is a tradition in the community and a memorable moment for seniors.’”
The newsletter also included others’ quotes about homecoming, for example:
Homecoming Week is a chance for the school to show school spirit and unity.” — Coach Cameron Willis
“Homecoming is about the student body and community, not just the football players.” — Blake Berry (UCHS Junior)
The student newsletter included the following information about the 2013 UCHS Homecoming Parade:
“This year, UCHS will host the 2nd annual Homecoming Parade at 6 p.m. September 26 in Downtown Union. Jenelle Gilliam, assistant principal at UCHS, promises that this event will be even bigger and better than last year. She said, ‘We learned a lot from what we did last year, so we started planning for the parade earlier this year.’
The PBIS Committee has been urging students, parents, and community members to participate in this event and is planning for a bigger turn out than last year.
Jim Palmer, guidance counselor at UCHS, summed it up best:
‘The Homecoming parade is the heart of school spirit and it presents the school to the public.’
This year, the homecoming parade will consist of community leaders, UCHS clubs, UCHS faculty, senior football player sponsors, Homecoming Candidates for queen and princesses, the UCHS marching band, UCHS cheerleaders, the 2013 Powder Puff players and cheerleaders, and of course, the UCHS football team and coaches.”
