UNION COUNTY — Although Union County dominated the first half of Friday night’s game at Greer, they fell short to the opposing Yellow Jackets with a final score of 31-28.
“Jacket Bowl 19” — pitting the Union County Yellow Jackets against the Greer Yellow Jackets — began with an 80-yard drive from Union County, which included a pass from QB Matthew Barnett to Jordan Spencer for a 49-yard gain and then another 29-yard gain from Spencer. Christian Petty eventually carried in the touchdown, with kicker Blake Berry getting the PAT, making the score 7-0.
Greer immediately answered by running the ball back to Union County’s 18 yard line, and after a false start from Greer, RB Quez Nesbitt ran for a 23-yard touchdown, tying the game 7-7.
Further into the first quarter, Shi Smith ran in a 55-yard touchdown pass from Barnett, with Union County taking a 14-7 lead.
In the second quarter, Barnett was sacked at the Union County 39 yard line, forcing the Yellow Jackets to punt. Greer then began its hurry-up offense, with Nesbitt gaining 21 yards before taking a big hit from Union County’s Dante Nash. Greer kicked a field goal, making the score 14-10, with 5:22 left in the first half.
Spencer then returned the kick to Greer’s 14 yard line, and after a time out from Union County, RB Dee Washington runs in a touchdown pass increasing Union County’s lead to 21-10.
On the next drive, Greer’s QB Mark Cusano took a big sack from Jamarcus Henderson and Cameron Queen for a 10-yard loss, and Greer was eventually forced to punt with 1:20 to go in the first half. Union County held Greer to 10 going into halftime.
The Greer offense began the second half from mid-field. Nesbitt then ran the ball in 45 yards before stepping out of bounds at the 4 yard line. Nesbitt carried the ball in on the next play, and with the PAT, the score was then 21-17.
After an unsuccessful drive from Union County, Cusano under-threw a pass which was picked off by Union County’s 6’1” defensive back, Kennedy Beatty. Union County was still unable to score, and Greer regained possession of the ball, Emmanuel Kelly fumbled, turning the ball back over to Union County.
Greer began the fourth quarter with possession of the ball. On the second play of the quarter, Nesbitt took another high-impact hit from Cameron Queen. Nesbitt picked himself up and two plays later, ran in for another touchdown, with Greer taking the lead with a score of 24-21.
With 6:56 to go in the game, Greer picked off a pass thrown by Barnett. On the next play, Nesbitt ran the ball 43 yards, putting Greer on Union County’s 11 yard line. After a delay-of-game yard loss, Greer’s Kelly caught a touchdown pass, giving Greer a 10-point lead with a score of 31-21.
Then, with 2:58 left in the game, Jordan Spencer scored a touchdown, narrowing Greer’s lead to three points with a score of 31-28. Union County eventually regained possession of the ball, but after Barnett was sacked and it used its last timeout, Union County could not make the comeback. Greer picked up the win with a score of 31-28.
