Typically, I use this space to discuss a service of the Union County Carnegie Library. Today, however, I want to talk about a service of the South Carolina State Library.
The State Library recently subscribed to Ebrary’s Academic Complete collection of ebooks. These titles are research-oriented (so don’t expect popular novels among the collection), and provide material on a variety of subjects, ranging from agriculture to history. A large focus of the collection is on social sciences, as well as business and economics.
Many of these titles are listed on the SCLENDS catalog, and can be viewed by patrons who are searching for titles within the consortium (including UCCL). However, the titles are only available to those possessing an SC State Library card. Fortunately, all citizens of South Carolina are eligible for a State Library card.
For instructions on how to receive a card, visit http://www.statelibrary.sc.gov/obtaining-a-library-card. Full instructions are included at this link, as is an application which can be completed online, or printed out and mailed (South Carolina State Library, PO Box 11469, 1500 Senate St., Columbia, SC 29211) or faxed (803-734-4757).
After obtaining a State Library card, the collection can be accessed at http://rpa.ebrary.com/login?url=http://rpa.ebrary.com/ebrary/scstate/unauthorized. The collection is made more accessible for users as apps are available for both Apple and Android users. Like DISCUS, this collection provides an excellent resource free of charge to all South Carolina citizens that most local libraries could not afford to provide to their patrons.
While the Union County Carnegie Library does not yet provide a collection of ebooks, plans are in place to make that service available in the coming months.
