Have you ever awakened in the morning and by lunch you’re wishing you can just go back to bed and start the day over again?
I guess we all have felt that way at some point in our lives. I mean, you just have one of those days you wish you could go back in time and do it differently or just avoid it all together. Maybe you went to the doctor and received bad news. The doctor said that word that we all dread to hear. It could be a terrible mistake you made and there is no way of fixing it.
Whenever things get this way it begins to look hopeless. I’ve heard friends say that life seems pointless to them and they eventually get the attitude of “What’s the use.” Even in the midst of uncertainty, doubt, and despair we still have a blessed hope.
Reflect back to Adam in the beginning of creation. I believe it is impossible for us to imagine what life for Adam was like. He was the first of his kind and for a short while he was the only one of his kind. It would be lonely but that would solve a lot of problems. He had no childhood, no parents, no guilt, no sin, and no problems at first. When he woke up each morning it was a beautiful day and he and God would have a wonderful day of fellowship together. Everything was perfect and when it seemed it just couldn’t get any better, God made Eve to be a companion for Adam. As we all know, Adam and Eve’s perfect life didn’t last for long. Life today for us is quite different than that life Adam enjoyed for a season!
We can identify with the struggles Adam faced after his perfect life was tarnished by sin. First, Adam was embarrassed to admit his mistakes and he did not want to confront his problems. Second, his failures affected his children and ruined their dreams. Third, Adam had to work a lot harder and got a lot less. Fourth, as he gets older, Adam has little to show for his life of labor. But even after his fall from the perfect life to a life tainted with sin, Adam still had hope.
In Genesis 3:15 we receive good news. God has defeated Satan. This defeat gives us hope today. All those “What’s the use,” can be turned into, “Praise His name!” When life seems hopeless remember we have the same hope as Adam did. Jesus has come, our sin debt has been paid, and salvation is offered to whosoever will. Where the first Adam failed, the second Adam is victorious. So when you feel like all is useless, remember and proclaim that we have a real hope of a better day. And what a day that is going to be! Until then, God bless.
