The Whitmire Economic Development Board members send their Thank Yous to all volunteers, public officials, who made the July 19 Veterans Celebration possible.
The first of its kind, outside of Veterans Day, this event included certificates of recognition for Whitmire area veterans living and deceased; guest speakers/public officials who gave patriotic speeches and power point visual presentations. The classic car show and parade on Main Street kicked off the days activities. The recognition ceremony was held at The Strand Theater in Heritage Park.
An afternoon of horseback rides for the kids and music from The Mattie Phifer Band. Former Whitmire residents came to town for the event, to some it felt like a reunion of sorts. The Board members have a family-oriented Gospel Music Day planned near the end of August. Feel free to visit the Board’s Facebook page.
The Summer Lunch Program at The Community Center for kids and young adults has attracted over 100 participants this year. According to Pastor Geneva Ware, past organizer of the program, “Folks are really enjoying the tasty meals.” She added with a smile, “It’s not the pre-packaged food, this is really home cooked food.”
The Summer Reading Program “Fizz Boom Read” went well this year according to Whitmire Library staff. This year’s programs included science oriented activities, certificates upon program completion and final day parties with refreshments were all a part of the informative reading programs.
Whitmire Library patrons, don’t forget that the E-Books On line program is available, with identification and a library card. If you haven’t visited the newly renovated library, drop by Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m.-5 p.m. to see new and more spacious media rooms, children’s area, and check out the new wilt arrivals.
Well, all righty readers, looks like the hot, withering, humid weather of summer is back with us. A few cool days, meaning temps in the 80s last week with rain sure was nice wasn’t it? Gottrocks and Garabund The Birthday and Deadline Fairy respectively are back in The Whitty with a need for more coolant in their jet wings. So lets wish them well, and we will see them in the next edition of the column. Stay cool, enjoy the rest of your summer.
