UNION COUNTY — An announcement made Monday could mean changes in classification for Union County Yellow Jackets sports teams.

The South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) released a proposed region realignment and expansion to five classes for high school sports beginning in 2016-2017.

The realignment process takes place every two years based on factors such as new schools and enrollment numbers. However, the new proposed realignment will expand the number of school classifications to five.

The proposed list has Union County as part of Class AAAA Region II, along with Blue Ridge, Eastside, Greer and Travelers Rest.

A representative from the SCHSL said the current list is preliminary, meaning schools may appeal the list if they choose to do so. The final version of the realignment will be decided upon Sept. 17.

Union County Head Football Coach Steve Taneyhill said the change is exciting for the team to move up to Class AAAA. There are currently 108 Union County football players attending summer practices, and Taneyhill said this year’s team will have experience on its side.

“We play these kids as puppies, and now it’s time for them to be dogs,” Taneyhill said, explaining that the majority of junior and senior players played as 9th and 10th graders.

Taneyhill said 15 out of 22 starters will return this year, along with five other players who played so much they could be considered starters.

The team has worked all summer, and this year’s motto is “Together.”
