UNION — A local service organization continued to serve the community recently by providing financial support to a World Series-bound Dixie Youth team.

On Friday, July 10, the Dixie Youth State Tournament got under way at the Timken Sports Complex with an opening ceremony and home run derby. When the tournament began, there were 36 teams in three divisions including Machine Pitch.

The teams competing in the Machine Pitch Division were Batesburg-Leesville, Aynor, Irmo, Bluffton American, Darlington, Lancaster, Belton, Delmae, Gregg Park, Georgetown, Parks Field, and the Union County Machine Pitch All-Stars.

By Tuesday, July 14 only Delmae and Union remained, facing off for the State Championship. When that game was over, the Union County Machine Pitch All-Star had won not only the State Championship but also advanced to the Dixie Youth World Series where they will play against teams from numerous southern states.

To help the Union County Machine Pitch All-Stars with the cost of traveling to the Dixie Youth World Series, the Union Civitan Club has donated $250 with President Amy Austin presenting the check to the team during the club’s recent luncheon meeting at the Inn at Merridun.

“The Union Civitan Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to helping people in our community,” Austin said in statement released Monday. “We like to be able to help wherever the need arises. We are able to help through fundraisers like our Annual Pancake Day and our Annual Illuminate the Lake 5K.

“We are so proud of the children that have worked so hard to get where they are today and have this opportunity to represent Union and SC in the World Series,” she said. “Because we are a volunteer civic group we understand the commitment it takes to be involved and volunteer your time, therefore we are super proud of these coaches too. With so much bad going on in the world, it is so nice to know that there are still good people willing to take the time with our young children in a positive way. Who knows, maybe one day one of these coaches or children will be a Civitan!”
