CROSS KEYS — All fire departments in Union County have been dispatched and fire departments in Spartanburg County called in to fight a fire at the Milliken Gillespie plant.
As of 1 p.m. fire trucks from fire departments from throughout Union County continued to arrive at the plant which is located on Lower Fairforest Church Road in the Cross Keys community. The first units were dispatched just before noon and within the hour firefighters using the Union Public Safety Department’s ladder truck were on the roof of the building while there fellow firefighters were inside the building battling the blaze.
More fire departments began being dispatched at the request of the officer in charge at the scene who requested more manpower to help in battling the fire. In response to the request, 911 dispatched all of the county’s 13 fire departments to the scene and asked for assistance from four fire departments in Spartanburg County.
As of 2 p.m. firefighters were still on scene working to extinguish the blaze.
The plant’s employees had been evacuated from the building as a precaution.
