UNION — City of Union Mayor Harold Thompson says he is running for reelection.
In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Thompson, who has served as mayor since 2008, announced that he will seek a third term in the Nov. 8 general election. Thompson began by thanking the people of Union for having allowed him to serve as mayor for the past eight years.
“Let me express my sincere gratitude to you, the citizens of Union, for granting me the privilege and opportunity to serve you as your mayor,” Thompson said. “It is with humility and pleasure that I am announcing that I will be seeking another term as the Mayor of the City of Union.”
Thompson said that during his eight years in office there have been many challenges which have been turned into opportunities for growth through the cooperation between himself and Union City Council and other organizations both public and private.
“In the past years we have been confronted with many challenges that presented themselves as obstacles, but we chose to accept them as opportunities to move the City of Union forward,” Thompson said. “Working as a team, with the City Council as well other governmental and business entities, we have experienced visible growth and meaningful increase in employment for our citizens.”
Thompson said that “being your mayor is one of the most serious and demanding responsibilities I have ever encountered, however learning the laws and policies that governs city government, interacting with state and federal agencies in order to bring growth to Union has been and is rewarding.”
If reelected, Thompson said he will work to continue and increase the economic growth the city has experienced over the past eight years.
“As your mayor, I will continue to fight for smart and beneficial growth that will enhance our city and elevate the living standards of our citizens,” Thompson said. “Through stable utility rates, reasonable tax rate and a conservative approach to the city’s annual budget, we will continue to experience economic growth by attracting new industries and encouraging the establishing of small businesses.
“My promise to you is to continue to be responsive, transparent and accountable to all of our citizens,” he said. “All of our goals can be attained by keeping God first in all of our deliberations. Thank you for your support and confidence in me as your mayor.”
Thompson is the second candidate to formally announce for Mayor of the City of Union. He is being challenged by District 1 Union City Councilman Tommy Anthony who announced his candidacy last weekend.
