CARLISLE — The identity of the motorist killed Saturday afternoon in a car crash that ended in fire is still unknown.
In a statement released Sunday evening the Union County Coroner’s Office announced that it, together with the SC Highway Patrol, is investigating the fatal crash that occurred on SC 72 near Jeter Chapel Road in the Carlisle area of Union County.
Cpl. Bill Rhyne of the SC Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred around 3:46 p.m. when a Nissan four-door traveling west on SC 72 ran off the side of the road six miles east of the Town of Whitmire, crashed into some trees and burst into flames. Rhyne said the driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the accident. He said when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road the driver over-corrected and ran off the left side of the road and crashed.
Rhyne said that at the present time the year of the vehicle was unknown as was whether or not the driver was wearing a seat belt.
In its press release, the Union County Coroner’s Office stated that it and the SCHP are working to identify the victim. It further stated that an autopsy was scheduled be performed on the body of the deceased on Monday at Newberry Pathology Associates.
Union County Deputy Coroner John Fallaw said Tuesday morning that while the autopsy was performed his office has not received the results. He said that the investigation is continuing.
