JONESVILLE — Winter weather that coated Union County’s roads with ice was the likely cause of an automobile accident that left one man dead this past weekend.

Union County Coroner William E. Holcombe announced Saturday evening that Jimmy B. Thomas, 61, 114 Booker St., Jonesville was involved in a single motor vehicle accident on SC 9 that afternoon. Holcombe said that Thomas was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center by Regional One where he was produced dead at 2:16 p.m. He said that an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Thomas’ body Sunday morning at Newberry Pathology Associates.

On Monday, Holcombe stated that Thomas died as a result of massive internal injuries suffered during the wreck. He said that Thomas’ death was accidental in nature and related to road conditions.

Saturday’s accident was also investigated by the SC Highway Patrol. In a message posted on SCHP Message Board, L/Cpl Tony Keller report that the accident occurred around 12:23 p.m. on SC 9 3.14 miles west of Jonesville. Keller said that Thomas was driving south on SC 9 in a 2001 Ford when his car ran off the right side of the road and struck a ditch and a tree. He said that Thomas was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was not ejected from the vehicle, but was trapped inside and had to be extracted via mechanical means.

Keller also said that the accident was related to the winter weather.
