UNION — The Union County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating a car crash that left one person dead and another injured.
In a statement released Monday night, Union County Coroner William Holcombe said his office and the SCHP are investigation an accident involving one vehicle that occurred on SC Highway 56 in the Enoree section of Union County.
Holcombe said that his office is investigating the death of Leroy Dean Davis, 34, 1001 Jones Ford Road, Union, who he said was a passenger in the vehicle. He said an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Davis’ body Tuesday morning at Newberry Pathology Associates.
No information was available about the results of the autopsy as of Tuesday afternoon.
L/Cpl Gary Miller of the SCHP reported that the accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. Monday on SC 56 approximately 5.6 miles west of Clinton.
Miller said the vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer was traveling east on SC 56 when it ran off the right side of the road, then crossed back across the road, running off the left side. It then went down the embankment and overturned, striking a tree.
The driver of the vehicle was identified by Miller as Rhonda M. Bellew, 30, of Union. Miller said Bellew was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. He said Bellew was injured, but was not ejected from entrapped in the vehicle and was transported by EMS to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Also traveling in the vehicle was Davis who Miller said was in the right front passenger seat at the time of the accident. He said Davis was also not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Miller said no other vehicles were involved in the accident and there was no one else besides Bellew and Davis in the Blazer. He said the accident is still under investigation.
