UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets football team advanced to the third round of the 3A playoffs by defeating the Greer Yellow Jackets, who were undefeated until Friday’s match-up.

Union County defeated Greer on the road Friday in a final score of 39-22 to advance to the next round of playoffs and take on Chapin in an away playoff game this Friday.

After a big return, Union County’s Shi Smith ran in a touchdown from seven yards out, taking a 6-0 lead early in the 1st quarter. Greer later answered with a score from 24 yards out with the PAT, moving into the lead 7-6.

Union County QB De’Airrius Smith connected on a 41-yard touchdown pass to Douglas Brannon. The Yellow Jackets made it in on the two-point-conversion attempt, but a late-holding flag was thrown and Union County was forced to attempt the play from the 14-yard line, at which they were unsuccessful. Union County was up 12-7.

Greer answered back again with a score of their own and a two-point conversion, which put them back in the lead at 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Union County was successful on a 35-yard field goal attempt, tying the game at 15.

Later in the quarter, Greer scored and took a 22-15 lead over Union County. Union County kicked a field goal from 24 yards out at the end of the first half, with Greer leading 22-18.

On their opening possession of the second half, Greer missed a 32-yard field goal, and Union County took over on their own 20-yard line. Then a screen pass to Union County’s Shi Smith led him 76 yards into the end zone, putting the Yellow Jackets in the lead 25-22 in the third quarter.

Union County’s Montray Feaster caught a pass on 4th down, and on the next play, QB De’Airrius Smith ran in the touchdown from six yards out with the PAT, putting Union County in the lead 32-22.

In the fourth quarter, Union County’s Douglas Brannon intercepted a Greer pass, returning it to Greer’s 18-yard line. Union County attempted a 32-yard field goal and was unsuccessful. Union County still led by 10.

With less than seven minutes left in the game, Shi Smith took another pass 54 yards into the end zone, and the PAT was good, giving the Yellow Jackets the 39-22 lead. Greer’s next possession ended when Union County’s TJ Glenn intercepted a pass, and the Yellow Jackets retained their 39-22 lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Union County will hit the road to take on Chapin at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.
