UNION — The Sims Middle School girls volleyball team fell to Granard 3-0 on Wednesday.

“The girls started off without serving being on their minds,” said Coach Tracy Duncan. “We could not get balls in. We shanked a lot of balls that could have been easy passes and did not communicate. The fair is in town, and I think we had that on our mind, truthfully. We even had our hair down.”

Sims lost the first game in a final score of 25-11. Duncan said in the second game, subs came in and played their hearts out.

“Abby Freeman had some nice passes, as did Neely Parks,” she said. “Paige Blackwell hustled and has improved tremendously.”

Duncan also said the 7th graders on the team work well together.

“Carmen Glenn had some nice passes.”

Sims lost the second game 25-14, and then the third game in a final score of 25-8.

“In the third game, Amber Gilliam passed well and served well,” Duncan said. “Everyone got to play a little.”

Duncan said the team has improved greatly over the course of the season.

Wednesday was senior recognition night for the 8th graders, and the team also wore pink for breast cancer awareness.

The team’s playoff seed will be determined during today’s contest at Dawkins Middle School, and they play on Saturday at Dorman.

Duncan said her team has both height and talent.

“If we would move our feet and communicate while on the court, we would be undefeated,” she said. “My 8th graders should be killing the ball at the net. Despite this loss, we have had a great season.”
