GAFFNEY — The Union County Yellow Jackets varsity football team will face its rival on the road in tonight’s season opener.

Union County hosted longtime rival Gaffney Indians for last year’s season opener, pulling out a last-second field goal for the close 29-28 win. Union County’s offensive MVP for that game was QB De’Airrius Smith, who completed 29 passes for 437 yards and two touchdowns. Smith will return this year as the team’s senior quarterback.

Last year’s loss was the beginning of a five-game losing streak for Coach Dan Jones and the Gaffney Indians.

Since preseason practice began, the Yellow Jackets’ motto has been “Together,” and coaches and players say the team has a more united mindset than ever before. The Jackets also have 15 out of 22 starters returning this year, and Coach Steve Taneyhill said experience will be a major asset for the team this year.

The Yellow Jackets also have a new defensive coordinator — Coach Mark Razzano. Last year, Razzano served as defensive coordinator at Gaffney, and prior to that, he served the same role at Blue Ridge High School, Spartanburg High School and Boiling Springs High School.

“(Razzano) brings a lot of energy, and you can see it every day,” said Coach Taneyhill.

Taneyhill also discussed what the Jackets will be up against in tonight’s match-up.

“Gaffney always has athletes; this year is no different,” said Coach Taneyhill.

Taneyhill said this year’s Gaffney team is solid on the defensive line and has an experienced QB as well as some really good offensive linemen.

“The key for us is how well our offensive and defensive lines play, and we must force some turnovers,” Taneyhill said.

Tonight’s game begins at 7:30 p.m. at The Reservation in Gaffney. Look for game updates on The Union Daily Times Facebook page, on Twitter @UnionDailyTimes, and at www.uniondailytimes.com.
