UNION COUNTY — The Union County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public not to fall for a telephone scam in which scammers call claiming to be sheriff’s deputies threatening to arrest the person they are calling for not showing up in court if they don’t pay a fee.
In a statement released this afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office announced that it has received complaints that people are calling and posing as deputies claiming the person they are calling did not show up for court. The caller then tells the person they are calling that they will be arrested soon if the court fees for not showing up for court are not paid.
The press release states that “this is a scam. Our officers are not calling individuals about not reporting for court.”
If anyone receives a call like this, the press release states they should hang up and immediately notify the Union County Sheriff’s Office at 864-429-1611.
