UNION COUNTY — A Jonesville woman was arrested after attempting to deliver contraband to an inmate at Union County Jail.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reported that Monkia Marie Ryans, 24, of 281 Belue Road, Jonesville, was arrested and charged around 2:40 p.m. Aug. 9, after trying to smuggle contraband into the Union County Jail.

Sheriff David Taylor said Ryans had brought a Bible to the jail around 2:25 p.m. Aug. 7, and informed the jail supervisor that she wanted the Bible to be given to an inmate who was serving time. Taylor said the jail supervisor noticed the Bible didn’t look or feel right, so he contacted Captain Robbie Hines who oversees jail operations.

The Bible was taken and x-rayed, and during the x-ray, a green plant material was noticed inside the binding of the Bible.

The jail supervisor opened the bottom binding of the Bible and found loose tobacco, white paper and three marijuana cigarettes inside.

Taylor said Ryans was taken into custody after she was spotted hiding in a car in the jail parking lot during Sunday visitation. He commended the jail officer for quick thinking and thorough inspection, which is what lead to this arrest.
