UNION COUNTY — Coming off a 48-32 win over Chapman last week, the Union County Yellow Jackets football team prepares to host longtime-rival Gaffney Indians this Friday.

To pick up a win in their season opener, Union County led Chapman 20-10 going into the second half. A 73-yard pass from QB Brandon Thompson to Will Holacher set up a nine-yard touchdown pass to Shi Smith. To begin the fourth quarter, Thompson threw a 34-yard pass to Doug Brannon to give the Yellow Jackets a 41-17 lead.

Union County’s De’Shaun Holmes rushed for a game-high 209 yards on 34 carries; Markevious Glenn had 186 yards and a touchdown; and quarterback Brandon Thompson rushed for 65 yards, threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score. Shi Smith — who is already committed to play at The University of South Carolina next year — had eight receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns.

The Yellow Jackets will have another home game this week, as they host their longtime rivals, the Gaffney Indians. Gaffney also won their season opener last week in a score of 45-35 as they hosted T.L. Hanna. This week’s game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Union County Stadium.
