CARLISLE — Thirteen was a lucky number for the Town of Carlisle which saw its 13th annual Community Fun Day and Back To School Bash draw its largest turnout in its history.

Each year for the past 13 years the Town of Carlisle has held the Community Fun Day and Back To School Bash for the schoolchildren of the Carlisle community and their families. The family-friendly event is held just before children start the new school year and provides the children and their families with an afternoon of games, music, food, and live entertainment including a fashion show and a talent show.

This year’s Community Fun Day and Back To School Bash was the 13th the town has hosted and was held on Aug. 13. While 13 is usually thought of as unlucky, that wasn’t the case according to Carlisle Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn who said the event was the largest to date in terms of donations, volunteer participation, and attendance by the community.

“It was very successful, we had more people attend this year than in the past twelve years,” Ferguson-Glenn said Thursday. “It was just outstanding, it was the best year we’ve had in donations, volunteers, and attendance, it was great. I’d like to thank all those that contributed to making this event a success.”

Since it is held on the eve of the start of the new school year, the event not only provides schoolchildren of the Carlisle community and their families with an afternoon of fun, but helps them get ready for school as well. Each child attending the event is given a free book bag filled with school supplies such as notebook paper, binders, pencils and pens.

Ferguson-Glenn said Thursday that the town collected a total of 153 book bags filled with school supplies to be distributed during Fun Day. Even though the event drew its largest turnout ever and many of the book bags were given out last Saturday, Ferguson-Glenn said that the town still has a number of bags and is still fielding calls from Carlisle area residents interested in getting them for their children.

Residents of the Carlisle community with school age children interested in possibly getting free book bags from the town should call the Carlisle Town Hall at 864-427-1505.
