UNION — A volunteer group that delivers meals to the needy in Union and Buffalo got some help in paying for the meals they deliver from a very special group of people.
Meals on Wheels is an all-volunteer group whose members deliver meals along 10 routes in the Union and Buffalo communities serving approximately 75 people a day. The meals they deliver are prepared by the Union Medical Center at a cost of $3.59 per meal and in 2015 the group delivered 17,859 meals at a cost of $6,200 per month.
The group, which relies on donations and fundraising events to enable it to carry out its mission, spends 99 percent of its budget to purchase the meals it delivers with the rest used for postage.
In recent months, however, the group has struggled to maintain the level of funding it needs to purchase the meals its volunteers deliver. Meals on Wheels Vice President Kathy Stepp reported in April that the group’s yearly costs were $74,00 or $11,000 more than the $63,000 in donations it had received and other funds raised.
The group recently got some help in its efforts to secure the needed funding from the residents of Heartland Assisted Living. Among the residents of the facility is Margerette Greer who was a Meals on Wheels driver for 27 years who, while no longer driving for the group, is still working to support its efforts.
In order to do that, Greer and her fellow residents created a cookbook which they sold for $15 per copy. Their efforts have so far raised $800 for Meals on Wheels. Earlier this week, Greer and Heartland Assisted Living Admissions Coordinator Virginia Babb presented a check for $800 to Meals on Wheels board member Leigh Kingsmore of Blue Ridge Hospice.
Copies of the cookbook are still available at Heartland Assisted Living or you can contact Leigh Kingsmore via email to purchase. For more information about the cookbooks and/or to make a purchase call Heartland Assisted Living at 864-427-0315 or email LKingsmore@BlueRidgeHospiceSC.com.
