UNION COUNTY — High school football season officially begins this Friday, and the Union County Yellow Jackets are excited to take the field.

Union County will host the Chapman Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Union County Stadium for a non-conference game to begin Week 0 of this year’s football season.

Last year, Union County made it to the state 3A semifinals, while Chapman reached the second round of the 3A playoffs.

UCHS Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Bradley Adams has instilled this year’s team motto — “One Blood” — to his players throughout summer practices.

“We’re all together as one,” Adams said. “One team, no individuals.”

Adams said he looks forward to support from everyone involved, including members of the community.

“If we’re going to be successful here and get back to the Union County tradition, it has to be a group effort — from players, coaches and the community,” he said. “We all have to be on the same page if we’re going to get back to what we’re trying to get back to.”

Adams feels like his team is disciplined and ready to take on Chapman at home on Friday. Union County players to be on the lookout for include standout wide receiver Shi Smith, senior quarterback Brandon Thompson, defensive powerhouse AJ Hunter, and smashmouth offensive lineman Coby Dean.

Chapman’s head coach Mark Hodge said he and his team are glad the season is finally here, and he said he wanted to schedule the first game against Union County, whose players Hodge called “big and athletic.” Hodge said Friday’s game will help him see what kind of potential his team really has.
