UNION COUNTY — All the schools of the Union County School District have received accreditation for the next five years from a global organization of educators that works to improve schools so that their students reach their full potential in the classroom.

In a presentation to the Union County Board of School Trustees Monday evening, Chief Academic Officer Cindy Langley announced that all of the district’s schools have received accreditation from AdvancED. Langley said that the accreditation, which is good through 2020, was the result of a year-long internal review of the educational processes within the district’s schools. She said the review looked at the areas of leadership capability, instructional quality, and resource management.

Langley said that once the internal review was completed, the results were turned over for an external review that began in March. She said the external review made recommendations for improvements in the areas covered by the internal review as well as commendations in the areas of leadership, instructional quality, and resource management.

“The most important commendation the district received was the acknowledgement of the district’s commitment to students first,” Langley said.

After her presentation to the board, Langley presented the principals of the schools with the AdvancED certificates of accreditation awarded their schools.

According to its website (www.advanc-ed.org) AdvancED “is the largest community of education professionals in the world. We are a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. While our expertise is grounded in more than a hundred years of work in school accreditation, AdvancED is far from a typical accrediting agency. Our goal isn’t to certify that schools are good enough. Rather, our commitment is to help schools improve.”

The website states that the mission of AdvancED is to “lead and empower the education community to ensure that all learners realize their full potential.”

It further states that the values of AdvancED are:

• Dream Big. We are not constrained by the current environment or framework even as we work within existing systems.

• Stand for the Learner. We represent the interests of all learners with a commitment to equity and integrity.

• Be Bold and Daring. We take risks that support our beliefs.

• Drive Potential. We create and initiate change, growth and innovation in our work but also among each other. We embrace the individuality we bring and strive for excellence as a team.

• Be Tenacious. We are relentless in pursuing our mission.

• Build Connections. We expand and nurture our internal and external relationships.
