UNION COUNTY — While the first day of school is still a few days away for most students the new school year has already begun for teachers who are now back in their classrooms getting them ready for the arrival of the children they will be teaching.

Monday was the first day of the 2016-2017 school year for the teachers of the Union County School District, a number of whom spent part of the day doing some learning of their own. Elementary school teachers gathered at Buffalo Elementary and Foster Park Elementary schools Monday afternoon to be briefed on the new Science and Social Studies books they will be using this year. The state has provided the district with the new, interactive textbooks.

Before gathering to briefed about the new textbooks, the teachers, along with other staff members, were at their respective schools working to get things ready for the students who will begin returning to school next week. Teachers were organizing their classrooms and the materials and resources they will be using to teach with and meeting with each other to discuss the start of classes and the upcoming school year.

Teachers and assistants decorated the halls of the schools with posters designed to welcome students back to school and to encourage and inspire them in their studies. Classroom doors and the classrooms themselves were also decorated with messages of encouragement as well lists of the rules of the class designed to provide the students with guidance in how to act in class so they can get the maximum benefit from the lessons taught.

Students begin returning to Foster Park Elementary and the Union County School District’s other on Aug. 15. At FPES and other elementary schools, Monday, Aug. 15 will be the first day of school for students in the 1st-5th grades. For students in 5K the first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 16. The first day of school for 4K students is Thursday, Aug. 25.

Registration for the 2016-2017 school year is taking place at county schools today.
