It was hot that day so Santa/Swanger didn’t mind getting dunked in the dunking booth. The dunking booth was a major draw of Fun Day, especially for the children who enjoyed dunking “Santa” and the other volunteers who got in the dunking booth.

UNION COUNTY — The Miracle League of Union County has less than two weeks to raise $10,000 in order to receive a $75,000 grant to help pay for the construction of an “ALLStar Park” at the Timken Sports Complex.

Since February, the MLUC has been working to raise funds for the construction of the park which is designed to be all-inclusive and provide opportunities for play and recreation for everyone including children and adults with disabilities or diseases like multiple sclerosis, older adults with physical challenges, injured veterans, and children with Autism.

A groundbreaking was held May 24 for the park which is projected to cost $350,000 to build. Its construction is being financed through donations and fundraising events like the Music and Miracle Community Fun Day held July 9 at the Union County Fairgrounds. Sponsored by WBCU Radio the event raised more than $4,500.

In addition to the funds raised through Fun Day, the MLUC also received a $1,000 doantion from Jonesville Baptist Church along with a few memorials during that time.

Those who have contributed to the effort include the Timken Foundation which awarded the MLUC a $75,000 grant. The grant came with the promise that the Foundation will donate another $75,000 in the MLUC can raise the matching funds by the end of July of this year.

As of today (Wednesday, July 20), the MLUC is still $10,000 short of its goal and has only 11 days left to raise those funds for the match needed to receive the promised grant.

“We’re still $10,000 short,” MLUC Executive Director Amy Austin said Monday. “We have to raise $10,000 by July 31 to get the $75,000.”

Austin said that donors have the opportunity to have their names permanently displayed at the park. She said that churches, businesses, civic groups, families, and individuals can be sponsors and have their names put on a wall that will be built or the walkway to and from the park. The location will be dependant upon how much they donate.
