UNION — A Dixie Youth baseball team that enjoyed a very successful season this year was honored by the Union Lions Club which will permanently commemorate the team’s achievements.

Sponsored by the Union Lions Club, the Lions Baseball Team plays in the Dixie Youth Ozone Major League. The, team, which won all but one of 13 games they played this season and brought home not one, but two championships, were the guests of honor at Thursday’s meeting of the Lions Club.

When they arrived, the team brought with them the trophies they received as the Dixie Youth Ozone Major League City Champions and the Dixie Youth Ozone Major League Season Champions.

“We lost the first game of the season, but we regrouped and never looked back,” Coach Donnie Betenbaugh said. “We had a total of 13 games and we finished 12-1. We outscored our opponents 154-35. They dominated all season and won the City Championship 17-2.”

Betenbaugh added that six of the players are going to be on the All-Star Team that plays Myrtle Beach in the first game of the Dixie Majors State Tournament.

While they were the guests of honor at the meeting which included a dinner that featured pizza and ice cream, the team also had their trophies with them. They presented the trophies to the club which will place them on display at the Lions Club building on Main Street in downtown Union.

“Since the club is such an outstanding organization and sponsors our team, we wanted to give them the trophies in honor of their support,” Betenbaugh said.

“We have been sponsoring the Lions team for several decades,” Holley said. “Lion Sanders Read felt we should show our support for the team. We contacted Coach Betenbaugh who helped arrange this so that we could show them our support for all their hard work this season.”
