UNION COUNTY — A senior track athlete at Union County High School will hold a fundraiser this week as she prepares to compete in the 2015 Junior Olympics.
Alexis Garrett — a rising senior at Union County High School — has participated in track for the past six years at UCHS. This summer, she began running with the BSYAA (Boiling Springs Youth Athletic Association) AAU team.
Last month, Garrett participated in the region meet, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, where she set her personal record at 15.11 and 5’0, respectively. That meet qualified her for the 2015 Junior Olympic Games, which will be held in Norfolk, Va. Aug. 1-8.
“We’re honored to have Alexis represent Union County High School in the Junior Olympic Games,” said Union County Coach Imani Richard. “Alexis is a great role model. She’s an honor roll student, an athlete and has a part-time job.”
Richard said in addition to Garrett’s hard work, she is also blessed with talent and great coaches.
“Coach Brian Kemp saw the potential in her during her 9th grade season and has pushed her to improve every season,” Richard said. “This year, Coach White and the other BSYAA coaches have pushed her even further and have given her the opportunity to race against better competition.”
In order to raise funds for the trip, Garrett will hold a fundraiser at the Union County School District Office — located at 130 West Main Street, Union — at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16. There will be fish, hot dogs, leg quarters, baked beans, cole slaw, and sweet tea sold at the event.
