BUFFALO — Vacation Bible School at Wyatt’s Chapel Baptist Church was a great time for those attending who not only got to have fun but also got to help those less fortunate than themselves.

While the Vacation Bible School itself ran from Monday, June 6-Wednesday, June 8, it actually got started the preceding Saturday with a kickoff that Vanessa Ray, wife of Rev. Elijah Ray, the church’s pastor, said gave children an idea of what Vacation Bible School would be like.

“We started off that Saturday with our kickoff and the kids got to see what we would be doing,” Ray said. “We had a fun day with farm houses, rock walls, corn hole tosses, face painting, and games they could play. There was also a cookout.”

When Vacation Bible School began in earnest, each evening began with a meal in the church social hall followed by a musical service in the sanctuary in which children and adults sang songs reflecting the school’s theme. That theme was “Barnyard Roundup: Jesus Gathers Us Together” which Ray said was inspired by Psalms 23.

In addition to the music, the church was decorated according to theme with posters, photographs, and displays depicting farming and barnyards. The church also provided the children in attendance with hats and bandannas they might wear if they were working on a farm.

As with any Vacation Bible School, VBS at Wyatt’s Chapel featured prayers, Bible study, and crafts, all designed to emphasize the message of Christianity. Part of the Christian faith is good works inspired by faith in and the message of Jesus Christ, especially those of a charitable nature that help the less fortunate. Vacation Bible School at Wyatt’s Chapel included some of that good work.

Ray said that the adults and children attending Vacation Bible School were asked to bring toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. She said the donated items were collected each night and will be distributed by the church to the needy of the community.
