UNION — While sports is often thought of as a physical activity the annual KICK Sports Camp sponsored by New Life Baptist Church has a spiritual purpose as well.

The camp, which began Monday morning and runs through Friday, provides children in the first through sixth grades with opportunities play their favorite sports on the fields of the Timken Sports Complex. Children can choose between taking part in football, baseball, soccer, cheerleading, and girls softball. Each sport is played on a different field and church members, both youth and adult volunteers, teach the participating children the fundamentals of the sport they choose to play during the camp.

New Life Associate Pastor for Children and Youth Todd Davis said Tuesday that approximately 120 children were taking part in this year’s program. Davis said that the church sponsors the camp as part of its efforts to reach out to the community and share their Christian witness.

“We do it to reach the children, the sports is the draw,” Davis said. “We’re wanting to share the gospel of Christ with as many people as we can. It gives us an opportunity to get outside our church and into our community to let them know that we love and care for our people in the county. It lets us get out and make a difference in someone’s life.”

The church held pre-camp registration to get children registered to take part in the camp, but Davis said even if they were not registered in advance, children can still participate.

“They can still come out and play,” Davis said. “We start sign-in at 8 o’clock each morning.”

The camp runs from 8:30-11:30 a.m. each day and Davis said that those children who signed up in advance will receive a New Life KICK Sports Camp t-shirt Thursday. Davis said the t-shirts will be worn on Friday, the final day of the camp which will also feature a closing ceremony that evening.

Davis said the closing ceremony will be held at New Life Baptist Church, 502 Meansville Road, Union, at 6 p.m. Friday. He said that hot dogs and potato chips will be served at the ceremony.

In addition, Davis said the ceremony will feature an address by Union County High School Coach Bradley Adams.
