UNION COUNTY — The Lady Jackets softball players will look for a three-peat as they compete for the state softball championship for the third straight year.
After two game wins secured the Upper State Championship for the Lady Jackets on Monday, the team will face Hartsville in the State Championship series for the third straight year.
The team went undefeated throughout the regular season, and they lost only one game in the post-season to Chapin. The Lady Jackets faced Chapin again on Monday — this time to determine the Upper State Champions. Union County defeated Chapin in scores of 8-1 and 8-0 on Monday, winning them their third straight Upper State Champoinship.
In Game 1 on Monday, the Yellow Jackets scored six times in the sixth inning, and pitcher Bailey Betenbaugh delivered three strikeouts throughout the game. In Game 2, there was no score until the Yellow Jackets scored six times in the fourth inning — including an RBI single from Kristin Kicidis, an RBI triple from Dexlie Inman, and another RBI single from Katelyn Petty. The win went to pitcher Ashley Vinson who threw four strikeouts in addition to an RBI single in the 6th inning.
Coach Tommy Petty said his players know what they can do, and he feels he has probably been more stressed than they have.
“They kept telling me they were ready to play, and tonight, they were ready to play,” Petty said.
The Yellow Jackets will begin their state championship series this Thursday in Hartsville. This is the third straight year that Union County and Hartsville have met in the final championship series. Game 2 of the series will be at Timken Sports Complex; and Game 3, if necessary, will be played at a neutral location on Monday.
