UNION COUNTY — Union County gathered together to celebrate Independence Day with two consecutive events.

On Friday, the annual Party at the Pond was held at Buffalo Mill Pond, which included vendors, raffles, dance music and a live musical performance by Freddie Vanderford and Brandon Turner. A half-and-half drawing was held at the event, and the winner was Walker Smith of Buffalo. The winning ticket was drawn by Kadee Akers, 4, who was accompanied by her father, Sgt. Jonathon Akers of Catawba, N.C. Sgt. Akers has served in the U.S. Army for 10 years, including two tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is currently stationed in Ft. Campbell, Ky. The night culminated with a spectacular fireworks display over the pond.

On Saturday, Union’s annual Light Up the Lake event was held at Foster Park. The event included vendors and a live musical performance by Jukebox 45. The finale of the Light Up the Lake event was a large fireworks show above the lake.

Both events proved successful with large crowds and clear weather. Organizers of each event said plans are already being made for next year.
