UNION — Employees of the Union Medical Center are being urged to be a “Buddy” to some very special athletes on May 10 at the Timken Sports Complex.
Greta Bailey, Coordinator of Volunteer Services and Executive Director of the Union County Health Care Foundation, said that May 10 will be the “Union Medical Center’s Buddy Night.” Bailey said that all UMC employees are invited to take part in Buddy Night by being a “Buddy” to the athletes playing in the two Miracle League of Union County baseball games that will be played that evening at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. She said that as a Buddy to a Miracle League player, UMC employees will run the bases for and stay in the outfield with the player they are paired with.
According to the flyer advertising the event, the MLUC “is a baseball league consisting of children and adults with disabilities. In order for these players to play ball, they must each have a ‘buddy’ with them during the game. This buddy stays with them as they bat and run bases and is with them in the outfield. The role of the Buddy is to make sure the player stays safe and has fun!”
Bailey emphasized this in urging UMC employees to participate.
“Remember, our players can’t play unless they have a Buddy,” Bailey said. “Let’s make sure everybody gets to play.”
If, however, a UMC employee is unable to serve as a Buddy, Bailey said they can still be at the games to cheer the players on from the stands.
Buddy Night will take place during National Hospital Week (May 8-14) which is being celebrated by UMC with events throughout the week.
Decclared by the American Hospital Association, “National Hospital Week celebrates hospitals and the women and men who support the health and well being of their communities through dedication and compassionate care from the heart. The AHA declares this year’s hospital week theme to be: ‘Healthcare from the Heart.’”
The flyer advertising National Hospital Week activities at UMC states that the medical center “wishes to thank all associates for their contributions to improving the health and well being of the citizens of Union County.”
