UNION — An annual event that uses fishing to help children acquire knowledge, ethics and sportsmanship will be held Saturday, May 21 at Foster Park Lake.

The J.A.K.E.S. (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship) Public Safety/Kids Fun Day provides children up to the age of 15 with the opportunity a morning of fun activities including fishing.

As in the past, this year’s J.A.K.E.S. event will be held at Foster Park Lake. The event will be from 9 a.m-noon with registration from 8-8:45 a.m.

Registration forms can be picked up any sponsoring agency. Online registration can be done at www.dnr.sc.gov/acquatice/rodeos. Registration by phone may be done by calling 803-737-8483.

Paper forms should be returned the day of the event at the check-in/registration table to receive lunch and prize tickets.

The main activity of the event will be fishing with the children who catch a tagged fish winning prizes. There will also be opportunities for children to register for cool prizes donated by Academy Sports and Outdoors and other great organizations.

There will also be a Cammo Station, BB guns, a Smoke House, games, a rock wall, and a recycling trailer. There will be a reptile exhibit at 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. A free Child ID Program DNR “Take One, Make One” Shooting Trailer, and Elks Lodge raffles.

The children attending the event will have the opportunity to meet Union Public Safety officers, US Forest Service officials, and representatives of Community Service Agencies.

Lunch will be served to all children at noon and will be provided by the Union Public Safety Department.

Bring your own fishing gear and bait and enjoy fishing around the lake.

While bait will be available at the lake it will be so only a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Adults may help their registered child/children fish, but J.A.K.E.S. is an event for children.

No adult may fish in the lake on until after the event is over at noon. Any adult doing so before that time will be asked to leave and/or ticketed by law enforcement.
