UNION COUNTY — A tea party for mothers and daughters, summer art camps for the youth, and a reception for some young artists are all on the calendar of events at the Union County Arts Council.

Tea Party

UCAC Coordinator Amber Ivey said that the Arts Council will hold a “Mommy & Me Tea Party” on May 7 from 1-3 p.m. at the UCAC Art Gallery on Main Street in downtown Union.

Ivey said the event will be “an afternoon of tea, cookies, and creativity” with mothers and daughters working together to paint their very own “Tea Cup Flower Pot.” She said that refreshments will be served during the event which will be catered by Kirby’s Cake Shop and Apple Blossom Bakery & Cafe.

Since the event involve painting, Ivey urged those participating to dress in clothes that they won’t mind getting some paint on. However, Ivey said that the event will also feature a best hat contest and she urged mothers and daughters to enter their competition by wearing their best hat.

The fee for the event is $25 per mother and daughter.

Ivey added that space is limited and she urged those mothers and daughters interested in participating to call and reserve their spots.

Art Camps

Each summer the UCAC offers the youth of Union County the opportunity to explore art in a fun, educational, and safe environment through its Art Camps Program.

Ivey said Thursday that the success of last year’s Art Camps Program has lead the UCAC to expand it in order to provide the county’s youth with increased opportunities to participate. A total of 100 young people took part in the three art camps offered by the UCAC in 2015 and this year the Arts Council plans to offer four camps.

While the camp and the UCAC try to keep the cost of the camps as low as possible, funding is required. Ivey said the UCAC applied for grants to finance their year’s art camps but the requests were not approved. She said the UCAC is asking for the public’s help to allow it to continue and expand the Arts Camp Program.

“UCAC believes that by providing the arts to everyone in our county we are truly benefiting all of Union,” Ivey said. “We are giving children a chance to explore a talent that they may never have known existed within them.”

If you would like to make a donation to the 2016 Art Camps please contact Amber Ivey at 864-429-2817.

Young Artists

The work of some of Union County’s youngest artists is now on display at the UCAC Art Gallery which will hold a reception for them on April 19.

Ivey said that students in the art classes at the county’s six elementary schools submitted produced works of art using a variety of mediums to their teachers who then judged them and submitted the best ones to the UCAC. Those submitted items now line the walls of the main exhibit room of the Art Gallery.

On April 19, an “Elementary School Awards & Reception” will be held at the gallery from 5-6:30 p.m. to honor the students whose work is currently on display. The public is encouraged to attend the event and join the UCAC and the schools in honoring these talented children.
