UNION — Middle and high school students were honored for artistic achievement this past Tuesday during the Union County Arts Council’s Youth Art Show.

The Youth Art Show is open to middle and high school students who submit their works to their art teachers who in turn select works for submission to the show. The selected works are placed on display at the Union County Arts Council Gallery on Main Street in downtown Union.

UCAC Coordinator Amber Ivey said that a total of 90 works of art were submitted from Sims Middle School, Jonesville Middle School, Lockhart Middle School, Union County High School, and Union Christian Day School. She said that the divisions for the show are grades 6-8, 9-10, and 11-12, with each having first, second, and third place winners. In addition, there is an overall “Best in Show” winner.

This year’s winners and their works are:

• Grades 6-8

— 1st Place — Mahlon Shetley — “Small Rug”

— 2nd Place — Madisen Brewington — “Frog”

— 3rd Place — Cierra Goldman — “Fruit”

• Grades 9-10

— 1st Place — Hannah Bennett — “Bird”

— 2nd Place — Justene Snyder — “Blue and Red Feathers”

— 3rd Place — Madyson Russel — “Multi-Colored Abstract”

• Grades 11-12

— 1st Place — Ricky Cardoza — “Charcoal”

— 2nd Place — Tamara Wilkins — “Self Portrait”

— 3rd Place — Trey Maness — “Print Making”

• Best in Show

— Lori Hart — “Graphite”

The winners were announced and presented with their awards during a reception at the gallery Tuesday evening.

The Youth Art Show is sponsored by Gestamp which provided the prizes.
