UNION COUNTY — The Union County Relay For Life is looking to raise over $20,000 within the next two months to meet its 2015 fundraising goal for the American Cancer Society.
Relay For Life is a community based fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. Over the past 30 years, Relay For Life events have raised an estimated $5 billion for the fight against cancer.
The money raised through the Relay For Life events is used by the American Cancer Society to fund:
• Research grants and research programs
• Prevention programs
• Community and patient support programs
• Detection and treatment programs
• Construction of Hope Lodges
Today, there are more than 5,000 Relay For Life events in 20 countries and one those events is the Union County Relay For Life. Co-chairman Torance Inman recently addressed the Union Rotary Club about the status of the organization’s 2015 fundraising efforts.
“Traditionally, we raise money year round for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life,” Inman said. “Each year we gather for the actual relay event at the Union County Fairgrounds in the month of May.
“Fundraising for the year, however, can continue until Aug. 31,” he said. “Therefore, we had the event which netted some $70,000 and additional monies have continued to to be turned in and we are now over the $80,000 mark.”
Inman said that this means the Union County Relay For Life is near the 2015 goal set for it by the American Cancer Society.
“This puts us very close to the American Cancer Society goal for Union of $83,000,” Inman said. “We should be able to reach that goal by the end of August.”
Even though it is less than $3,000 away from the goal set for it by the American Cancer Society, Inman said Union County Relay For Life is even further away from the goal it set for itself.
“We are still a little short of our personal goal of $100,000,” Inman said. “There’s still two months left in the cycle and we expect some additional monies to be turned in.”
To meet it $100,000 goal, however, Union County Relay for Life will have to raise more than $20,000 by Aug. 31 to not only turn over $100,000 to the American Cancer Society, but to also pay off the costs incurred staging the event in May.
“We may hit the gross fundraising of $100,000, but we would really love to net $100,000,” Inman said. “Although all monies collected goes toward the American Cancer Society there are some expenses associated with putting on such a large event. There’s printing costs, signage and banners, the renting of the fairgrounds, power, candles, bags, and some smaller miscellaneous-type expenses. In general, it costs approximately $5,000-6,000 to put on that size event.”
Union County Relay For Life held its first fundraising event in 1996 and since then has raised a little over $2 million. Each year, the group has met the goal set for it by the American Cancer Society and in most years reached its personal goal.
To make a donation to the Union County Relay For Life a person can either make a donation through one of the Relay For Life teams or send it to Torance Inman at the Union County Chamber of Commerce, 135 W. Main St., Union. All checks should be made out to the American Cancer Society.
