MONARCH — The ability to read is one of the building blocks of learning. It is something to be celebrated that’s what they did recently at Monarch Elementary School.

Reading is Fundamental Inc. is the largest nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. Founded in 1966, it is based in Washington, D. C. with a total of 400,000 volunteers across the United States who provide 4.5 million children with 15 million books and a growing number of literacy resources each year.

The efforts of RIF to provide books to children was celebrated this past Friday at Monarch Elementary School. Principal Anita Maness said the school celebrated Reading is Fundamental Day by allowing each student to receive a free book of their choice.

Maness said the books are provided the school by RIF through Dollar General which funds the grant for the books and has done so for the past nine years. She said the grant obtained by Dollar General enables the school to receive enough books to do three distributions a year.
