UNION — Some children from a local church brought some Valentine’s joy to more than 100 residents of a local assisted living facility this past Saturday.

Carrying baskets full of Valentine’s cookies and Valentine’s cards, three girls — Taylor Howard, Noelle Head, and Lexi Merchant — from Augsburg Lutheran Church went door to door at Heartland Healthcare of Union, presenting each resident with a cookie, a card, and a smile, wishing them Happy Valentine’s Day. The children brought Valentine’s cheer to a total of 128 Heartland residents.

The cookies were made by two adult members of Augsburg Lutheran Church, June Gregory and Kim Kalb. Kalb said that when the cookies were done, Taylor, Noelle and Lexi then packaged them to hand them out at Heartland. She said the girls also made the cards they distributed.

Kalb said that the church did a Valentine’s distribution for the residents of Heartland Healthcare last year and “it went really well, so we decided to do it this year.” She said this year’s distribution was also a success for everyone involved.

“They (the children) had a ball, and the patients loved seeing the little ones,” Kalb said.

Spaghetti Dinner

The Valentine’s distribution is only one of the activities Augsburg Lutheran undertakes to benefit the community.

Kalb announced that the church will hold its annual spaghetti dinner on March 31 from 4-7 p.m. She said the menu will include salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, desserts, and a drink. A meal costs $8 and Kalb said the church will serve both dine-in and take-out.

In addition to the spaghetti dinner, Kalb said the church will also hold a bake sale at the same time. She said there will be cakes, pies, cookies, and bread for sale.

The church uses the funds raised by the spaghetti dinner and the bake sale to support organizations and activities that benefit the community. Kalb said the church places a special emphasis on helping groups and programs that benefit children including Secret Santa at Grace United Methodist Church and foster families.

In addition, the church uses the funds raised to serve a Veterans Day Breakfast for local veterans on Veterans Day.

The church also uses the funds raised through the spaghetti dinner and bake sale for its Vacation Bible School.
