WHITMIRE — A Whitmire alumnus and four-time Super Bowl Champion will be honored during an assembly at Whitmire High School this Friday.

The Super Bowl High School Honor Roll celebrates high schools and communities that have contributed to Super Bowl history. This platform is designed to link the past 49 Super Bowls with this year’s game and honor the players, head coaches, high schools and communities that have positively impacted the game.

Whitmire alumnus Donnie Shell will be honored during an assembly at his high school alma mater at 9:45 a.m. this Friday, Jan. 29.

Shell is a four-time Super Bowl Champion from his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1974-1987. He was a member of the Steelers’ famed “Steel Curtain” defense in the 1970s. Shell retired as the NFL strong safety career leader in interceptions with 51, and he started 11 straight years for the Steelers. He was selected to the Steelers All-Time Team, the College Football Hall of Fame and the NFL Silver Anniversary Super Bowl Team.

Shell was also a five-time Pro Bowler between 1978-1982, a four-time All-Pro selection, and the Steelers’ team MVP in 1980.

Shell was also the Carolina Panthers Director of Player Development from 1994-2009.

Whitmire High School will receive a commemorative Golden Football produced by Wilson in honor of Shell, since he graduated from the school and was on an active Super Bowl roster. The ball will feature Shell’s name, the Super Bowls he appeared in, and Whitmire High School.

As one of the honored schools through the program, Whitmire High School will also receive an NFL Character Education Curriculum and be eligible to apply for grants up to $5,000 from the NFL Foundation to help support and grow its high school football program.

Nearly 3,000 players and head coaches will be recognized through this program this season, as well as more than 2,000 high schools.

The program is set to become an annual tradition, highlighting champions on and off the field. Following every Super Bowl, every high school that produces a player or head coach in the game will be recognized.
