UNION COUNTY — Do you love barbecue? If the answer is yes — and for a lot of folks it no doubt is — then you’ll want to be at the South Carolina Works Upstate office in Union on Saturday, Jan. 23.
That’s the day the Southern BBQ Network will hold a training class for those interested in becoming a certified BBQ judge and member of the network.
In a statement released earlier this week, the Southern BBQ Network announced that the training session at the South Carolina Works Upstate office in Union will be the first of four regional training classes it will be holding in the new year. The training session in Union will be held held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with lunch included at the South Carolina Works Upstate office at 103 W. Main St., Union. The class costs $25 and the fee for membership in the Southern BBQ Network is $35.
The announcement states that “once you have completed the class you can judge events that the Southern BBQ Network sanctions throughout Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.”
Southern BBQ sanctioned events include Uniquely Union in Union County, Newberry Pork In The Park in Newberry County, and the Commissioner’s Cup in Columbia. A total of 14 barbecue events were sanctioned by SBN in North Carolina and South Carolina last year.

About The Southern BBQ Network
In 2010 a group of persons who loved barbecue, not only for eating but also in the art of preparation, decided to form an organization that preserves southern barbecue through qualified trained judges but also to improve communities through assisting charitable events. Thus the Southern BBQ Network (commonly known as SBN) was formed. The founders having previous experience from other barbecue judging organizations created a foundation based on the principles of fairness in judging by establishing training classes, a blind judging method and a fair scoring system. As a not for profit organization the membership donates their time to support charitable events, with the satisfaction of providing support to local community charities through fund raising and the enjoyment of pigging out on some of the best BBQ in the region. Members cannot Judge until they have attended a training class. The training consists of gauging barbecue utilizing a numeric system judging the appearance, aroma, taste and texture of the product. This can be for any combination of pork such as pork butts, ribs, whole hog, sauces, chicken or beef based on the event organizers choices.
The concept was widely accepted as membership grew rapidly and the reputation of organized events expanded throughout the southeast. Currently, judging is done in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina with fourteen regular events judged in 2015. Annually a cooker of the year is recognized by the Southern BBQ Network based on a point system of teams of cookers that entered SBN events. In 2014 the program was changed which started an annual Cook Team of the Year competition held in Moncks Corner, South Carolina with the top ranked 14 teams in a four meat, head to head competition.
In the past few years the SBN has also been represented at the World BBQ Championship contests in Las Vegas, Nevada and Orlando, Florida by competitors and judges. Members have also competed on television BBQ shows on the Travel and Discovery Channels.
In addition, the SBN has previously selected a charitable organization to make an annual contribution. This has been Shriners Children’s Hospitals, Berkeley Lions club, The Red Cross and the Summerville Miracle League.
Just imagine going to school to learn how to judge barbecue like this. It would have to be a barbecue lover’s dream.
