The winning department will receive a pallet of bottled water.

UNION — Save-a-Lot kicked off its “Bags For a Brighter Holiday” event on November 1 and hopes to set a new record for supporting local food banks. The program was started based on the belief that everyone deserves a holiday dinner.

Save-a-Lot is encouraging the community to join in their efforts, and on the first day of the event had 91 bags donated! Shoppers can help a neighbor in need this holiday season by purchasing a bag for just $6.49. Inside of the bag, customers can find all the essentials in making a delicious holiday meal. All bags are being donated to a variety of local charities to distribute back into the community.

As owner of the Goodwin Group Save-a-Lot stores, Dwayne Goodwin says “giving back to the community is just part of our culture here. The community has been a great supporter of our store, and we want to give back. I take great pride in operating a Save-A-Lot store in Union where we offer quality foods and customer savings. But we still have folks with food needs that extend beyond short-term emergency situations and we want to make sure they have a special holiday too.”

Charities or churches who are interested in participating, can sign up for a day or a weekend to sell bags at their local store, and every bag they sell will be given to their organization’s food bank. We have also challenged local police and fire departments to a friendly competition, where they can bring their cars and trucks out to our parking lot and compete to see who can sell the most bags for their community. The winner will receive a pallet of bottled water. Yes, over 2,000 bottles of water will be donated to the winning police or fire department in each participating town!

The Goodwin Group Save-a-Lot stores are owned by the Goodwin family, who live in Greenville and have stores in West Union, Laurens, Pickens, and Union. The Bags For a Brighter Holiday program runs through December 19. You can support your local food bank by purchasing a food bag for $6.49 at your local Save-a-Lot store. Please call Roger Sullivan or Ricky Hood at our Union store (864) 427-8811 with any questions.
