UNION — Gingerbread houses are part of a local church’s efforts to help raise funds for a group that provides meals for the elderly and another group that provides housing improvements for the needy.

The Episcopal Church of the Nativity sponsored a Gingerbread House contest this week, giving adults, young people, and children the opportunity to express their artistic side and demonstrate their architectural skills using gingerbread as their main building material.

The results of that contest are now on display in the church’s Parrish Hall and are part of a fundraiser the church is sponsoring today and Saturday.

The contest and the fundraiser was organized by the Episcopal Church Women Committee with the goal of raising funds for Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.

Committee member Caroline Barger said that the Gingerbread houses will be on display during the fundraiser which will be held today from 9 a.m.-noon and 4-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.

“We will have a bake sale and a crafts sale,” Barger said Thursday. “All the proceeds will go to Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.”

Barger added that one of the houses on display was donated by Carla Champion and there will be a drawing for it.

Admission is $1 and Barger said that the admission fee enables the individual to vote for the People’s Choice.

“Their favorite house,” Barger said.

Meals on Wheels delivers meals to senior citizens in Union and Buffalo while Habitat for Humanity provides household repairs for low-income families and individuals.

The fundraiser, which got under way Thursday, was preceded by the contest which drew entries in the adult, youth, and children categories. Judging took place Tuesday and the awards were presented Wednesday evening. The winners and their entries are:
