UNION COUNTY — The Union County Sheriff’s Office will hold a free class to help keep women safe during the holiday season.

The UCSO will sponsor a free self-defense class for females ages 15 and up from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at the Union County Recreation Department, located at 111 Thomas Street, Union.

Sheriff David Taylor said this is the first time the UCSO has done something like this, and he said he feels it is important to have at this time with the holiday season approaching. Taylor said he wanted to have the class before Black Friday shopping.

“Lots of women are out shopping for the holiday season, and we want to make them more aware of their surroundings and able to keep an event from happening such as a purse snatching or personal attack,” Taylor said. “This way, they can be prepared to respond in an appropriate manner that would allow them to get away from the offender and keep them safe in the meantime.”

Taylor said being unaware of one’s surroundings is a problem for many shoppers, and some helpful advice on that will be given during the two-hour class.

“We want them to develop the levels of threat awareness,” Taylor said. “That’s in the mind.”

He said once someone can identify where there is the biggest threat, they will become more aware of their surroundings.

The first hour will be a classroom setting, and the other half of the class will include hands-on teaching of maneuvers and techniques which can be used for self protection.

The class will be taught by Sgt. Wendy Childers and Investigator Scott Coffer, who is a self-defense instructor. Taylor said others will also be involved in teaching the defensive tactics and physical aspects of the class.

As of Thursday, around 25 women had signed up for the free class.
