UNION COUNTY — The discussion of an anonymous letter, an update on UCHS tennis courts and election of board officers were the focus of Monday evening’s school board meeting.

Officers Elected

The Union County Board of School Trustees met

Monday evening, and the first order of business was the election of officers. Jane Hammett was elected board chair, and Dr. Wanda All was elected vice chair.

Letter

In other business, board member Manning Jeter requested to discuss an anonymous letter which was sent to board members, local officials and media outlets on Oct. 12. The letter contained statements regarding board members and district employees, as well as quoted conversations that the anonymous writer alleged took place behind closed doors. Jeter said he wanted to clear the name of an innocent person who was mentioned in the letter, and he made a motion to have an outside source investigate the source of the letter. The motion carried, with only one vote against it, which came from Jane Wilkes.

Wilkes said she is as curious as anyone about who wrote the letter because she was mentioned in it by name as well, but she said she voted against it because there was nothing criminal or threatening in the anonymous letter, which means nothing could be done if the identity of the anonymous writer was discovered. Wilkes also said the letter was one of numerous anonymous letters throughout the years, and all of them could not be investigated.

Tennis Courts

In other business, district finance officer Lynn Lawson updated the board on the reconstruction of the two oldest tennis courts at Union County High School and the re-surfacing of the four newer courts. Lawson said both were completed between June and late August. Lawson said the district was also in the process of doing some landscaping and replacing some of the older wooden borders and stepping stones with poured concrete walkways.
