UNION — The installation of new officers and the recognition of the service of outstanding members was all part of the recent Union Civitan Club meeting.
Civitan International is an association of community service clubs that was founded in 1917 and is based in Birminigham, Alabama. Individual Civitan clubs undertake service projects designed to benefit their communities. The various projects undertaken by individuals clubs include participation in the Adopt A Highway program; promoting the development of hospitals; honoring community leaders; supporting local reading programs; supporting children in financial need; purchasing playground equipment for developmentally challenged children; and holding events for developmentally challenged individuals.
The Union Civitan Club has its own projects including supporting the Union Miracle League and holding its annual Pancake Day fundraiser.
A number of prominent American business, government, and sports leaders have been Civitans including Thomas Edison, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Petty, and Jake Denholmme.
The Union Civitan Club held their their annual Installation of Officers on Oct. 29 in a ceremony attended by Bill Tolleson, South Carolina Civitan Govenor, who challenged the new officers for 2015-2016 with the “We Are The Key Challenge.”
The new officers are:
• Modest Keenan — President
• Tommy Sinclair — President-Elect
• Becky Cobb — Treasurer
• Donna McMurray — Secretary
• William Sprouse — Chaplain
• Theodore Walker — Sergeant-At-Arms
The ceremony also saw several Civitans honored by the club for outstanding service.
Amy Austin was named Officer of the Year while Barbara Rippy was named Civitan of the Year.
Cobb accepted the award for the Project of the Year – Union Miracle League, and McMurray accepted the award for the Fundraiser of the Year — Pancake Day.
Keenan accepted a plaque from Austin from the Miracle League team that was sponsored by the Union Civitan Club.
Rippy was presented with a plaque by Mrs. Amy Austin from the Miracle League Team that was sponsored by the Rippy’s.
This Saturday, Nov. 14, the Union Civitan Club will hold its 3rd Annual Illuminate the Lake 5K Run. The fundraising event will be held at 6 p.m. on Veterans Drive in Foster Park.
Also this Saturday, the club is holding a chicken stew fundraiser selling stew prepared by Civitan Tommy Sinclair for $7 a quart. The stew will be ready from 4-8 p.m. at Foster Park.
