Humorous, outrageous music facts

Union Music Club holds October meeting

UNION — The Union Music Club met on October 13, 2015, at the Union County Museum at 7 p.m. Club President Tommy Bishop welcomed everyone, and then everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by Miss Grace Lybrand and Mr. and Mrs. Sanders Read. President Bishop thanked the host and hostesses and called the meeting to order.

First, the members recited the Invocation, the Federation Collect, and sang the Federation Hymn. The October song from the “Together We Sing” book entitled “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” with words and music by Jaan Kenbroven and J. W. Kellette, was sung by all.

A thank you note received by the club from Amelia Wright was read, and she thanked us for allowing her to play for us.

Program Book

President Bishop stated that he had sent our yearly program book and other papers to the South Carolina State Music Club President, Ann Guest, and that the club president manual is now on line.

Cross Keys House

A letter was received from Mrs. Ola Jean Kelly, Director of the Union County Museum, asking for help at a Cross Keys House event on Dec. 5 and for help in providing Christmas music from the Civil War period. There will be a charge for attending this event.

Mr. Jack Kelly made the motion for the club to make a donation to the Union County Museum. Mrs. James Stepp seconded the motion and a unanimous vote was made to give a donation.

Victor Borge

Mrs. James Stepp presented the first study course for the year from the book entitled Victor Borge’s My Favorite Comedies in Music by Victor Borge and Robert Sherman. This book encompasses a wide range of musical facts and information about composers, instruments, pianists, fiddlers, and conductors which were all very humorous and some outrageous. What is more amazing is that the information is all true. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and is looking forward to the next installment from this book Victor Borge’s My Favorite Comedies in Music at a later date.

Next Meeting

President Bishop thanked Mrs. Stepp for the interesting and amusing presentation and then reminded the club members of the Nov. 10 meeting at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity when Mr. John Kvasnicka, Union County School District Orchestra Director, and his students will be performing.

Homecoming Celebration

The members were reminded of the Homecoming Celebration at Grace United Methodist Church on Oct. 25. Mrs. Caroline Bradley Smith will be singing the gathering music, and the chancel choir will sing a special anthem. Mr. Ronnie Lybrand, Mr. Tommy Bishop, and Miss Sally Summers will perform at the dinner.
