UNION — How does an artist create their work? What inspires their creativity? What mediums do they use in their work and why do they use them?

Those are the questions that will be answered by Columbia artist Toni Elkins when she does an “Abstraction Intimidation” presentation at the Union County Arts Council Art Gallery at 10 a.m. this Friday.

Arts Council Coordinator Amber Ivey said Monday that Elkins will do a presentation on the various aspects of being an artist.

“She will explain how she creates her pieces,” Ivey said. “She will also talk about her inspiration for her work and the different mediums she uses.”

Ivey said the presentation is free and open to the public.

An abstract artist whose work is mostly done in mixed media, Elkins paints to music she finds compelling and relaxing. She feels different kinds of music can change the rhythm of an artist’s work and move them to another genre.

Elkins has been elected to 18 signature memberships including the South Carolina Watermedia Society, Watercolor USA Honor Society, Rocky Mountain National, Texas Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. She has paintings exhibited in Permanent Collections in the Ashville Museum of Art, Soringfield Missouri Art Museum, Randolph Macon Women’s College, Clemson Botanical Gardens and many other sites.

Earlier this year, Elkins was selected by the Arts Council to serve as the Juror for the 2015 Art Exhibition which was held at USC Union. As Juror, Elkins judged the 65 paintings submitted for the exhibition and the Art Show and selected the winning entries.

Elkins has been judging art shows since 1993, and in April of this year served as Juror for Artfields Junior Art Exhibition in Lake City, SC.

Over the course of her career, Elkin has won the Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award for contributions to South Carolina Art in 1999 and the Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Contributions to SC Watercolor Society. The most recent awards for Elkins’ work are the SC State Fair: Clark Ellefson Merit Award, 2014 and The American Artist Magazine, Honorable Mention Mixed-Media, 2013.

Some of Elkins’ work is currently on display at the UCAC Gallery, 116 E. Main St., Union, but not for long. Ivey said following Friday’s presentation, Elkins will take down her work currently on display at the Art Gallery. She urged all those interested in art to come view Elkins’ work at the gallery and to attend the presentation Friday morning.
