UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets football team secured its third-seed spot in Region III-3A with a victory over Chester.

Union County defeated the Chester Cyclones in a final score of 24-7 in the final game of the regular season on Friday.

In the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets’ Ty Thomas scored with a one-yard touchdown, taking a 6-0 lead over the Cyclones.

In the second quarter, Union County scored again when QB De’Airrius Smith ran in a seven-yard touchdown, making the score 12-0, which remained throughout the first half.

In the third quaqrter, Chester took the opening drive down field for a touchdown and PAT, cutting Union County’s lead to 12-7. The Yellow Jackets then answered back with a touchdown of their own from Shi Smith, then leading Chester 18-7.

At the beginning of the 4th quarter, Union County converted the first down, and Montray Feaster scored for the Jackets, giving them the 24-7 lead. The Jackets held the lead throughout the remainder of the game, including an interception that stopped a drive by Chester.

Union County’s De’Airrius Smith led the Yellow Jacket offense, totaling 449 yards of total offense down the field for most of the night, passing for 282 yards and two touchdown passes to Shi Smith and Montray Feaster. Shi Smith also had a total of 102 yards in addition to his scores.

Union County finished the season with a 4-6 record, 3-2 in Region III-3A. The team is the third seed in the region and will travel to Belton-Honea Path on Nov. 13 for the first week of playoffs.
