UNION — It’ll be the day before Halloween and all through Main Street in downtown Union there will be plenty of candy and fun for all the little ghosts and goblins attending this year’s Halloween Downtown.

Halloween Downtown is an annual event that has been sponsored by the merchants of downtown Union and the Union County Chamber of Commerce for more than 15 years according to Chamber Director Torance Inman. He said that, as in previous years, the goal of this year’s Halloween Downtown, which will be held Friday, Oct. 30, is to allow children and their families to have a safe and fun Halloween celebration.

“The downtown businesses provide a safe environment for children to celebrate fall and Halloween,” Inman said Friday. “The downtown businesses as well as other businesses and organizations provide candy and a small number of activities for the children on Main Street.

“The Union County YMCA will have games for the children on Main Street so the children can have fun time while waiting in line to receive candy,” he said. “Miss Elaine’s Dance Studio will have a Halloween dance routine in the street in front of the studio.”

In keeping with the spirit of Halloween and the purpose of Halloween Downtown, Inman said that the staff of a number of the stores on Main Street will be in costume.

“A number of the businesses and merchants will be dressed up in costume to entertain the children and not scare them,” Inman said. “A couple of the churches will have tables set up to give candy to the children on Main Street as well.”

Halloween Downtown will be of short duration, however, and Inman urged parents to make sure their children are there in time to enjoy it.

“It is important for parents to know this is a very short celebration,” Inman said. “It is scheduled to start at 4:30 and end at 5:30.”

While the businesses of downtown Union are, together with the chamber, the main sponsors of the event, Inman said other businesses and groups are welcome to take part as well and that those wanting to do so should call him at 864-426-0883.

Office Closed

Inman also announced Friday that the Union County Chamber of Commerce office, 135 W. Main St., Union will be closed for renovations Monday, Oct. 26 through Friday, Oct. 30.

“We have been planning for some time to upgrade our interior, courtyard, and signage,” Inman said. “We will do that this coming week.”

Inman said the renovations will include new flooring put down by Ben’s Paint; painting the interior of the office by Gene Hailman; and new furniture donated by Park Sterling Bank and Scott Sandor.

“To do all that, especially to have the new flooring put in, we had to move everything out,” Inman said. “While that is taking place we will not be able to answer phone calls or emails to the office. Anyone who needs to contact the chamber during that time can call me at 426-0883.”

Inman said it is hoped the renovations will be completed by Thursday and he and his staff able to begin moving back in that day and Friday and be back in operation the following Monday at the latest.
