MONARCH — Halloween will soon be here and the holiday wouldn’t be the same without pumpkins decorated for the occasion and that just what students at Monarch Elementary School did recently with a contest that also celebrated literacy.

In a statement released Monday, Principal Anita Maness announced that “students at Monarch Elementary School got into the fall spirit by having a pumpkin decorating contest. Students and their parents were invited to decorate a pumpkin like their favorite book character. Student participation in the event was excellent, with over 90 book character pumpkins entered in the contest.”

Maness said that ”first place and second place was selected in each grade by a panel of guest judges. Students were also allowed to vote on their favorite pumpkin as well, this pumpkin was Children’s Choice. Everyone at Monarch Elementary School enjoyed seeing all of the wonderful pumpkins in the library, and it was such a fun way to celebrate literacy.”
