Union County now 2-1 in Region III-3A competition

UNION COUNTY — The Union County Yellow Jackets football team improved its record to 2-1 in region competition with a win over Clinton on Friday.

The Yellow Jackets defeated the Clinton Red Devils in a final score of 36-12, improving to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in Region III-3A competition.

The Yellow Jackets led the Red Devils 22-0 after the first half.

Union County QB De’Airrius Smith scored in the first quarter, giving the Jackets a 7-0 lead, and the Yellow Jacket defense only allowed Clinton one first down in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Smith connected with Shi Smith on a touchdown pass, giving Union County a 13-0 lead. The next Union County score came from a touchdown run by running back Ty Thomas, putting Union County up 19-0. Before the end of the half, a 36-yard field goal from Union County made it a 22-0 ball game.

Union County recovered an onside kick to begin the third quarter, and De’Airrius Smith connected with Demarcus Brown on a 32-yard touchdown pass, making the score 29-0 after the PAT.

Clinton began the fourth quarter with possession of the ball, and after an interception by Union County’s JD Cheek, Shi Smith ran 72 yards for the touchdown. This put the Yellow Jackets up 36-0.

Clinton put their first points on the board with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, making the score 36-6. With just over a minute left in the game, Clinton scored again, making the score 36-12.

Union County Coach Steve Taneyhill praised his defense after the game. They held Clinton to 18 yards and one first down in the first half. Sacks were recorded by TJ Glenn, Debo Woods, AJ Hunter and Deshawn Thompson.

Ty Thomas rushed for two touchdowns and QB De’Airrius Smith throwing three touchdown passes — two to Shi Smith and one to Demarcus Brown.

Union County will go on the road to Lancaster on Friday, possibly determining the second-place team in the region. The game could also result in a home playoff game for Union County.
